STAMP OUT HUNGER WITH LARGEST ONE-DAY FOOD DRIVE
It’s easy to help – place donations near home mailbox
WHAT: The public is urged to join letter carriers, food banks and Valley of the Sun United Way to fight hunger on Saturday, May 11 during the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. This is the largest one-day food drive across the nation and comes to life in the Valley when more than 5,000 local city and rural letter carriers take to the streets to collect non-perishable food donations while delivering the mail across Valley neighborhoods.
The food drive will provide vital resources to our Valley’s major food banks: St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, St. Vincent de Paul and United Food Bank.
WHEN: Saturday, May 11
HOW: It’s easy to participate! Donate at the mail box.
• Residents fill any empty grocery bag with non-perishable food items and simply place the bag next to the mailbox. Suggested donations include: canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice, cereal or peanut butter.
Letter carriers pick up donations while on their regular route.
WHY: One in five Arizonans lives below the federal poverty line and food banks provide a vital emergency response to help many families, seniors and children fight hunger. The food drive provides a critical boost during the summer, when many food banks have depleted donations received during the year-end holiday drives. Ending hunger is possible, and partners have come together to implement a long-term plan for hunger free communities.
WHO: NALC Local Union 576, the U.S. Postal Service and Labor’s Community Service Agency lead the local food drive efforts and is supported Valley of the Sun United Way to maintain the supply of emergency food at local food banks and to inspire Valley residents to fight hunger.
